Bringing Home a New Puppy – Your First Night!

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time for owners, but have you ever thought how your puppy must feel?

It was been taken away from the only home it has ever known, the warmth and security of it’s mum and siblings and taken on a journey by car with people it has most probably only met once before if ever!

So when you get it home you need to make the first few days less traumatic for your new family member but still keeping the rules and boundaries in place that you wish to adhere too in the future-here’s how…

First of all, it is a new baby, it needs SLEEP, so give it a quiet corner preferably with a crate where it can come and go as it pleases while you are there, make that zone child free-when it is in there it is not to be touched-it is your puppy’s safe place. Make sure it is not in a draught, that the bed is thick enough and there is no cold coming through from underneath the crate, especially if it is on a stone floor.

When it comes to your pup’s first night with you, pick up the crate and take it upstairs, your puppy will sleep well being close to you (but not on your bed), why have him so distressed that he keeps you up all night? That is not fun for anyone, especially your puppy!

He won’t mind being shut in as he is next to your bed, can see you and hear you. This is only for a couple of weeks until he has settled in well and is happy in your home, you can then move him back downstairs where you want him to be.

I have done this many times both when fostering puppies and when I had my own dogs as puppies and never had any problems, in fact quite the opposite, as this time upstairs also helps with toilet training as you are there to let him out when he stirs in the middle of the night so-win-win!
