Why do so many dogs dislike the vets so much? We have all seen the dogs refusing to go through the doors, being dragged or carried into the consultation room or wetting the floor (or worse) all signs of a very distressed dog.
So what do we do when the dog then growls or snaps at the vet due to fear? We muzzle the dog and force it to sit still while it is being examined and/or vaccinated.
How much worse can it be for the dog? It is being forced into a frightening situation with no means of escape and it can’t defend itself….how distressing is that?!
The dog is now terrified and has been set up for a lifetime of hating the vets, could the owner have done anything different? Most definitely!
Think about it, the only time they have been to the vets they had vaccinations , Microchip placement or been ill-none of these experiences are particularly good and have you seen the size of needle for the microchip?! It is a necessary and legal requirement but I wouldn’t want to go back either!!
The solution…..Taking your pup back a few times when the surgery is quiet, weighing the pup and giving it a few treats and/or a fuss could change all that SO easily, making it a good experience for the future, it really is that simple.
Would you rather have a very distressed dog or one that, if not loves going to the vets (some do-honest!) at least is reasonably happy.
The choice is yours…..
